On Sale Thursday 22nd September Sadly there’s a lot to learn from the three Afghan wars that Great Britain started and lost in the last two centuries. These were part of the Great Game as the world’s superpowers jockeyed for poll position across their newly conquered globe. It is the particularly disastrous first one (1839-42, if you’re asking) that Matt Panesh, aka stand-up rhymester Monkey Poet, homes in on with deadly historical accuracy and wicked barrages of humour. Based on contemporary first-hand accounts and told from the central character of the young Lieutenant John Greenwood we see the development of the campaign as the Brits re-jig government policy to see off the Russians by invading Afghanistan first.
