Talk by Keith Parfitt, Site Director of the 2010-2011 Folkestone Roman villa excavations, and Senior Archaeologist, Canterbury Archaeological Trust. Followed by an open question and answer session.
The Roman villa above East Wear Bay at Folkestone was first identified in the early 20th century and was extensively excavated by S.E. Winbolt in 1924. The talk will look briefly at the work of the early excavators, before describing in more detail the most recent excavations of 2010-2011. Special attention will be paid to the evidence for pre-villa occupation on the site and the suggestion that the locality served as a port of trade before the Roman conquest. The main talk will be followed by a ‘question and answer’ session, in which ideas for future work on the site may be explored.
